Here's why everyone is talking about a negroni sbagliato with prosecco in it.

There is no known recipe for a "Negroni" or an equal-parts drink of gin, vermouth, and Campari in Italian cocktail books before the 1940s. Notably, Brucart refers to the same recipe as "Campariete" in 1943 and "Negroni" in 1949, attaching a new name to an existing drink. Common variations include using an orange peel (or lemon peel) in place of an orange slice (especially outside Italy), stirring then pouring over ice, and sometimes stirring and serving straight up. According to the International Bartenders Association recipe, the Negroni is prepared by pouring all the ingredients — starting from the highest alcohol content to the lowest — directly into an old-fashioned or rocks glass and garnishing with a slice of orange, similar to an old fashioned or spritz (short, minus the soda). A Negroni is an Italian cocktail, made of equal parts gin, vermouth rosso (red, semi-sweet), and Campari, generally served with ice, and commonly garnished with an orange slice or orange peel.

Count Negroni’s larger-than-life persona παλαιο wine bar (he reportedly worked as a cowboy in the U.S. before returning to Italy) only added to the cocktail’s allure. Count Camillo Negroni—an adventurer, gambler, and overall man-about-town—was a regular at Caffè Casoni, a popular bar at the time. I want to be surrounded by people drinking whiskey, enjoying their lives and listening to good music—not necessarily a party boy, high-fiving atmosphere but a congenial thing. You might find yourself at a table drinking a glass and say, “My god this is really good.” And someone will say, “Well you have very good taste. I learned a valuable life lesson that day, though.” — SC

You may add more gin to taste–but be gentle with the Campari. Plymouth is our stalwart gin, but we don’t fuss over that. Long live negroni sbagliato season! I mean, obviously both actors in it are wildly charismatic and don’t seem opposed to being slightly flirtatious with each other—but ultimately, I think what really charms me is the idea of not only having a go-to drink, but making it something as complex and specific as a negroni. Maurizio claimed that his father started experimenting with delicious Italian cocktails in the late 1960s and early 1970s, during a time of social change in Milan where Italian fashion and counterculture expanded.

According to the younger Stocchetto, his lifelong bartender father wouldn't have made a clumsy mistake such as grabbing the wrong bottle and pouring it for a customer. Mirko Stocchetto's son, Maurizio, set the negroni sbagliato's origin story straight. A traditional negroni recipe calls for ice, vermouth, Campari, gin, and an orange garnish — no prosecco. Well, sbagliato is actually an Italian word meaning "mistaken" or "wrong." The negroni sbagliato was the 1972 invention of Milan bartender Mirko Stocchetto, who "mistakenly" swapped out gin for sparkling wine while mixing a negroni. Whether the drink sounded good because of D'Arcy's charming voice or the mention of prosecco, netizens started hounding bars for this alluring negroni in 2022. After all, the point of a pre-dinner cocktail is to stimulate your taste buds.

On Facebook, the post was instantly popular and moved quickly. Often times, "shame" is the word that best describes reality. I mean, of course, I love sci-fi and stuff like that, but I'm not, like, a comic book crazy guy. It hurts now, but I'll love this memory, I thought to myself.

I’ll make it, I’ll take your money, it’s not my place to judge. What makes a Negroni a Negroni is the “equal parts” aspect of the original recipe, says bartender Jason Renner, who has made countless Negronis over his years at Italian restaurants. The “Americano” was a hugely popular drink among American soldiers in Italy during World War I that used Campari, sweet vermouth, club soda and a lemon twist. The Ship of Theseus thought experiment asks that if you replace all of ship’s parts (as you must, over time) and rebuild it looking roughly the same, is it the same ship or a new one? Many have capitalized on the Negroni’s popularity to try to argue that a “Bourbon Negroni,” a “White Negroni,” or a “Mezcal Negroni” are still a “Negroni” despite being different combinations of spirits.

This space is primarily to share about my love for Italy (currently on a 13 year romance) with a fair amount of real talk, practical advice, travel suggestions and adjusting to a new culture (Switzerland).
